Cyprus’ mobile internet usage has doubled each year, for the past three years

It is an irrefutable fact that the use of smartphones and the evolution of mobile communications networks have contributed to the rapid increase in the use of mobile internet, as well as to the change in the way we use the internet in general.

Cyprus, is a prime example of this, as the volume of mobile internet each year has doubled, over the last three years.

In the summer 2018, only Cytamobile Vodafone’s network saw an 80% increase in mobile internet usage. Of the approximately 1 million GB consumed during the summer of 2017, Cyprus has reached 1.8 million GB in the summer of 2018.

The big leap towards mobile internet usage, is further reflected by the fact that in the summer of 2016, consumption had reached only 0.43 million GB.

What has contributed to this, is how most users, during their holidays, have taken advantage of the upgraded mobile phone programs and the significant expansion in network coverage that has been recorded in recent years.

It should be noted that, currently, the geographical coverage for the 4G network is 84% and the population at 96%, whilst the 4.5G network covers urban centres and tourist areas with speeds of up to 1 Gbps.

Due to the ultra-high speeds that 4.5G users can offer, services such as video streaming, online gaming, social networking and online shopping are now an integral part of everyday mobile users’ behaviour.

There has been a similar increase recorded in various European countries according to the data provided by OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development).

Finland is the country with the largest increase of consumption in 2017 reaching 15.45 Gb, per subscription. It is followed by Austria (11.17 Gb), Estonia (7.16 Gb), Latvia (6.73 Gb), Lithuania (6.57 Gb) and Denmark (5.7 Gb) (http://www.oecd.org/internet/broadband/broadband-statistics-update.htm).

Another factor that has played an important role in the increase of the use of Mobile Internet is that of the European Regulation “Roaming Like at Home”, which has been applied across the European Union since the summer of 2017, whereby EU citizens can use Mobile Internet in the visited country at no extra cost (https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/consumers/internet-telecoms/mobile-roaming-costs/index_en.htm).

If the cost of Mobile Internet remained at the levels that once was, in the early years of using smart phones and tablets, none of the above would be feasible. “Smart” mobile programs such as Red or Red Family from Cytamobile Vodafone include Mobile Internet up to 20GB at very competitive prices.

The upward trend in both the use of Mobile Internet and data traffic is expected to continue in the years to come, as the arrival of Internet of Things, the spread of popular applications and the evolution of mobile devices are expected to maximize our needs.
