CYPRUS TELECOM AUTHORITY (CYTA) TO DEVELOP A FIBER OPTIC NETWORK WITH DOWNLOAD AND UPLOAD SPEEDS UP TO 1GBPS AND 120MBPS
Cyprus telecommunications authority (Cyta) announced on the 5th July 2018 that it is planning to develop a fiber optic network called Fiber to the Home (FTTH) that will be available from late July 2018 (https://cyprus-mail.com/2018/07/05/cyta-launches-fibre-optic-network/).
With the new fiber optic network, the benefits include higher download and upload speeds up to 1Gbps and 120Mbps, respectively (https://www.cyta.com.cy/cyta-fiber/en).
FTTH is imperative for the advancements of our era, as the business world evolves around high speed and taking into account that the digital transformation of business, economy and society sets new more demanding standards for state and private enterprises alike.
Taking the above into account, FTTH will significantly lead Cyprus into the Digital Age and the Age of Gigabit. (http://politis.com.cy/article/sintoma-apo-ti-cyta-tachitites-pano-apo-200-mbps-meso-optikon-inon).
It aims at taking advantage of new major infrastructure projects, providing innovative products, such as Cloud, Internet of Things, AI, VR, 3D printing, and Autonomous Robots, amongst others (https://www.stockwatch.com.cy/el/article/synenteyxeis/rena-royvitha-panoy-se-trohia-allagon-i-cyta).
Also, the FTTH will be utilized in all sectors of Business, Medicine, Education, Culture, Tourism, Public Service, Citizen Service and Entertainment (http://economy.cyprustimes.com/2018/07/05/ta-diktya-neas-genias-tis-cyta-odigoyn-tin-kypro-stin-epochi-toy-gigabit-kai-ston-psifiako-metaschimatismo/).
From a business perspective, the applications used for communicating with clients, personnel and suppliers, demand a large volume of data, fast and direct. FTTH will increase the quality and reliability of the connection.
Through the fiber network, every business will have access to; unlimited internet with the option of even higher speeds that reach up to 1 Gbps; stable and uninterrupted connection for all users and all appliances; and faster upload and download speed of large files, to and from their suppliers and partners, with minimum waiting time.
Additionally, it will provide access to image and sound of high quality, video conferencing, without interruptions as well as provide fast and continuous access to the more modern business Cloud applications.
On a national scale, exploiting the modern infrastructure and creating a digital economy will increase competition and further develop Cyprus’ economy, while, at the same time, will create new jobs.
Statistically, an increase in broadband by 8-10% may increase the GDP of a country up to 1,5%, a major economic benefit (http://politis.com.cy/article/sintoma-apo-ti-cyta-tachitites-pano-apo-200-mbps-meso-optikon-inon).
As a result, Cyprus can become one of the most modern telecommunication destinations worldwide, taking also advantage of its prime geographical location (https://translate.google.com.cy/translate?hl=en&sl=el&u=http://politis.com.cy/article/cyta-archizi-i-egkatastasi-tou-diktiou-optikon-inon&prev=search).
It is worth noting that the fiber optic network has been designed to cover the connectivity needs of upcoming 5G networks (http://in-cyprus.com/news/local/e100-million-cyta-investment-for-high-speed-network/).
CYTA is already progressively deploying the network, starting from the urban areas, with the aim to gradually offer connectivity of approximately 200.000 points, in the next 10 years (https://cyprus-mail.com/2018/07/05/cyta-launches-fibre-optic-network/).
FTTH is the largest telecommunication investment in Cyprus, as it constitutes an investment of national importance.
